fowlmouth's story reminded me of my first kill
I was about 10 yrs of age and i went squirel hunting just me and my brother . I had went with my dad since i was 5 (he isnt much of a hunter) more like just taking a walk threw the woods with a gun teaching me safety. I never shot any thing but cans and old cars.I remember thinking i didnt like the way my dad hunted but never said any thing about it. Dad told me i could hunt by my self when i was 10 so i couldnt wait. Finailly i was of age and a week over do, we as a family went down to the farm. I said dad lets go hunt! he replied, we cant this weekend i have work to do;I thought heres my brake;. I reminded him what he had said 5 yrs ago, and being a man he didnt go back on his word instead he said ok BUT!! you have to take your brother with you incase something happens .This would be my brothers 3rd hunt at the age of 5 . i remember fealing excited and scared the same time . We decided to take just one gun and share it and i would do all the carrying untill we seen a squirel. Walking twords the woods dad watched nervously , as we were just about to the woods turned and shouted, im going to bring back dinner as it was allways a inside joke b/c we never brought any thing back ,he smiled and said ok. Now doing things the way i wanted and running the show thinking ;i had to bring one back;. i put a plan together, my brother and i exicuted it and found a squirel . i was shocked it worked! i (thought to my self )shaking waiting for the squirl to come down a little to be shure of my back drop as i can here dad saying that and me making fun of it . Its time! its now or never. what had seemed like 30 min was a mier 2 mins after checking my watch. I shot..... missed ,i reloaded my stevens single shot , aimed and squezed off another round, I HIT HIM!!! i shouted. I watched the squirl hang on that branch with one hand in amazement . finally it fell, we walked up to it blood was comming out of its nose and mouth . We gave each other high fives and celebrated. then th time came to pick it up, and i thought i dont want to touch it ,so comley i told my brother to put it in my field vest like it was no big deal. after it was in the pouch here come dad making shure every thing was ok, i showed him the squirl , he said good job and gave me the first hug i can ever remember and the last one at that. He is really my step dad since the age of three and i remember that moment like it just happened . We finished off that day with one more squirel . As we were walking back to the house , there he was smiling on the back porch prouder then ever with that i just yawned excuse and a brite red face . Then he said i remembered what i told you 5 yrs ago i didnt forget ,Iwas there watching you when you shot that squirel. I almost blew my cover when i was trying to hold in my excitment , you see that was the only work i had to do, that was the whole reason we came down , with a pat on the back he said good job son!
Dinner tonight is on me i said ; that night we had fried squirel mashed patatoes , squirel gravey and fried okra
I use to hate hunting with dad , but now i get excited when he has the urge to go. I took him on his first duck hunt last year and he really enjoyed it . i tell him he has been more like the son and im the dad ,i taken him on his first deer hunt and turkey hunt , also i tought him how to fish with a lure in stead of nite crawlers , its funny how i give him the good job and the that-a- boy now ;D
sorry about the long story that is the first time ive ever told it to any one
